The night of Choro, Samba, Bossa Nova
This concert will feature solo guitar from Brazilian guitar virtuoso Alessandro Penezzi. In addition he will be joined by two Bay Area musicians, vocalist Kiyoe Wakabayashi and piano/woodwind player Jim Schneider. You’ll enjoy Penezzi’s compositions, as well as other great examples of Choro, Bossa Nova, Samba and MPB.
Considered one of the greatest Brazilian guitarists of his generation, composer, arranger and guitarist, Alessandro Penezzi was born in Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil. He began his musical studies at seven years old. A multi instrumentalist, Alessandro plays 7-string guitar, tenor guitar, cavaquinho, mandolin and flute. Alessandro has recorded over 20 CD’s of music, and has performed with many of the great Brazilian musicians. He has taught at California Brazil Camp since 2010, and is building a following in the US as one of the great virtuosos and composers in the Brazilian Popular Music genre in the world today.
Kiyoe is a San Francisco-based jazz vocalist. She has performed at various festivals and venues throughout California, and performs in Japan from time to time. She has performed with some great jazz and Brazilian musicians, including the late Smith Dobson, Herb Ellis, the late Bob Florence, Ricardo Peixoto, Claudio Amaral etc. She has studied Latin American music from Grammy nominees Wayne Wallace, Weber Iago, Marcos Silva, and Carlos Oliveira, Guinga, Chico Pinheiro, Spok, Hermeto Pascoal and more. She holds a Master’s Degree in Music from San Jose State University.
Pianist and woodwind player Jim Schneider is a Bay Area native who has performed, recorded, and taught jazz and latin-jazz music in the Bay Area for several decades. He has performed with ensembles and artists such as Viva Brasil, Claudia Gomez, Ed Johnson, the late Smith Dobson, Pan Caribe, and many more. Jim’s teaching experience includes 20 years of Jazz Piano at De Anza college as well as Jazz Improvisation, Jazz Ensemble and other courses at De Anza and Gavilan colleges.
