“The Sheryl Bailey/ Harvie S Quartet featuring vocalist Sherri Roberts and pianist David Udolf.” – East Coast “hot” meets West Coast “cool”: New York artists Sheryl Bailey and Harvie S join the Bay Area’s Sherri Roberts and David Udolf for an evening of jazz, musical conversation and song.
In the Bay Area to promote their self-titled debut recording as a duo, Plucky Strum, New York based Sheryl Bailey and Harvie S weave together intimate musical story lines that combine jazz, classical, and Latin music while exploring the joy of improvisation through lush harmonies, beautiful melodic lines, and captivating rhythms.
They will be joined at Café Pink House by San Francisco vocalist, Sherri Roberts. Sherri and Harvie have been longtime collaborators over several decades, having co-produced three critically acclaimed recordings. (They are to soon begin work on their fourth!) The evening’s musical program will include compositions from the Plucky Strum duo project as well as select songs from Sherri and Harvie’s repertoire. New, previously unrecorded material will also be featured.
Rounding out the quartet is pianist David Udolf, one of the most sought after accompanists in the Bay Area and West Coast musical director for jazz icon, Mary Stallings. David last appeared at Café Pink House with vocalist Tessa Souter.
Called a “sizzling guitar goddess” by All About Jazz,Sheryl Bailey has toured worldwide with her organ trio, her quartet (featuring Jim Ridl), and The Electric Ladyland Project (featuring Vic Juris). She is Professor at Berklee College of Music and voted a “Rising Star” in 2013, 2014, and 2015 Downbeat Jazz Critics Poll.
Award winning bassist Harvie S is a veteran of the jazz and Latin music scenes. He has recorded and toured with the cream of the crop: Kenny Baron, Dexter Gordon, Stan Getz, John Scofield, James Weidman, Pat Martino, Mike Stern and Paul Motian. His longtime creative partnership with jazz legend Sheila Jordan redefined bass/vocal performance.
“A superior bop and standards vocalist” according to The Los Angeles Times,Sherri Roberts has been performing in the Bay Area for over 25 years, and has toured jazz venues up and down the West Coast as well as in New York and London. Locally, she surrounds herself with top Bay Area musicians, while her past recordings with Harvie S have featured such luminaries as Phil Woods, Lew Soloff, Chris Potter, Mark Soskin and Danny Gottlieb.
About Harvie and Sheryl (“Plucky Strum”):
“Beautifully unassuming music that shows both players to be engaging conversationalists, pillars of support and strong writers…There’s nary a superfluous gesture or unnecessary phrase to be found on Plucky Strum…. Musical acumen, unerring taste, and simpatico sensibilities carry the day.” Dan Bilawsky, All About Jazz
“Stylistically, Roberts bears a significant resemblance to gin ’n’ satin seductress Julie London. But where London’s voice was distant as a winter moon, Roberts is all dappled sunshine…shimmering…Enchanting” – Christopher Loudon, JazzTimes
